Overview
Advantage Rent A Car is a privately
held rental car company, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. We’re
a proven service-focused company that provides business, leisure,
government and local customers with a wide range of services at more
than 150 U.S. locations and 130 locations in 33 countries
internationally.
History
In 1963 a small business called “Three
Ninety-Nine Car Rentals” opened its doors serving the large
military population in San Antonio, Texas. Growing very
quickly over the next 20 years into feeder and leisure
markets throughout the western United States, in 1985 the
operation was consolidated under one name – Advantage Rent A
Car. Initially serving the government traveler, we expanded
by developing market share in the local retail and airport
markets. Today, expansion of the Advantage brand continues
throughout the U.S. into the Sunbelt states and major
leisure airport markets. In 2001, Advantage attained
worldwide presence by launching an affiliate partnership
program that has grown to an international network serving
more than 33 countries.

Rental Policies
Credit Cards, Debit Cards, and Prepaid Credit Cards
Any credit card used MUST be in
the name of the renter. We do accept all regular CREDIT CARDS
issued by American Express, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners
Club or Carte Blanche.
Advantage Rent A Car also accepts
debit cards with a Visa/MasterCard logo on them as a form of
financial responsibility at the beginning of the rental. Debit
cards may only be used for rentals of economy through full size
vehicles. The customer MUST have available sufficient funds to
cover the cost of the rental, plus a security deposit of
$300.00. This will be charged (not just authorized) at the
beginning of the rental process. The deposit will be credited
back to the account upon return of the vehicle and satisfactory
settlement of the charges within ten business days. All renters
using a debit card to pay for their rental must present proof of
current liability insurance. Airport/airline arriving and all
non-local customers must present a return airline
ticket/itinerary; local renters must provide a copy of a recent
utility bill with their current address and their home phone
number must be verifiable through directory assistance or the
phone book.
Credit Card Guarantee
A credit card may be required to reserve a specific vehicle
class or all vehicle classes during certain times of the year
based on vehicle or seasonal peaks. Please be advised that there
is a 48-hour cancellation policy for all reservations with a
credit card guarantee. If you do not cancel guaranteed
reservations at least 48 hours prior to the reserved rental
time, you will be charged for one day of rental.
Age Requirements (US Locations only)
Renter must be at least 21 years of age. Renters 21-24 may be subject to a young driver fee of $15.00 per day ($22 in California).
Renters under age 25 may not be eligible to rent the following:
-STAR - Convertible
-SPAR - Pick-up truck
-FVAR - 15-passenger van
-LCAR - Luxury car
-SFAR & PFAR - Sport utility vehicles
Additional Drivers
Additional drivers may be added to the rental contract. An additional
fee for each driver per day may be applicable. Contact your local
Advantage office for more details.
License Requirements
Any driving restrictions also apply to additional drivers. Rental
requirements for a US citizen include a valid driver’s license and
major credit card in own name. For non-US citizens, the renter must
have passport, international driver’s license and major credit card in
own name.
Global Driving Qualifications
For non-US citizens, the renter must have a passport,
international driver’s license and major credit card in his/her
own name.
Geographic Driving Parameters
Advantage Rent A Car restricts the
driving of our vehicles to the continental U.S. Travel into
Mexico or Canada may be allowed upon renter meeting coverage and
governmental requirements (see policies on Canada and Mexico for
details). Travel with unlimited mileage throughout the
continental U.S. allowed unless mileage restrictions apply under
a rental rate or program.
Mexico
Renters traveling from the US to our Mexico affiliate locations:
-Renters must have a valid driver’s license and credit card in the renter’s name
-Minimum rental age is 23
-Infant seats are not available for rental
-Vehicles are not allowed to travel into the US from Mexico
-Please see individual city policies for more information on mandatory taxes, fees and coverages
Renters traveling into Mexico from our US locations:
-Purchase of Mexico entry surcharge ($26/day) is mandatory.
-Renters may not travel past the first checkpoint.
-Coverage includes 24-hour roadside assistance.
One Way Rentals
Starting at only $60 per day, with NO DROP FEE and free mileage
of 500 miles per day, our one way program lets you pick up the
car and return between any two Advantage U.S. locations.
Advantage has 160 locations throughout CA, WA, AZ, NV, UT, CO,
TX, NM, and OK.
Advantage does not monitor renter's driving route; therefore, if renter drives to a destination in excess of 500 miles from point of origin during one 24-hour period, mileage fees will be applicable.
Vehicles have limited availability and special one way rate may not be available during holidays or peak periods. 14-day maximum rental. Offer valid at all US locations.
Rates/Specialty Rates
Some discount rate plans may have special terms and conditions
related to car class, date/time of pickup, date/time of return
or location. Renters should carefully review reservation
information, rate calculations and any rate terms and conditions
before renting the vehicle. If a change is made in the
reservation, renter should get a new estimated total based on
changes.
Taxes and Fees / Reservation Estimates
In addition to time and mileage for the rental vehicle, taxes
and fees are to be paid by the renter. Taxes and fees vary by
location and may or may not be included in the estimated total,
depending on the reservation system being used. Totals provided
at the time of reservation are estimates only. For a breakdown
of rental charges, call 1-800-777-5500 and speak to one of our
reservation team members.
Vehicle Early Arrival / Hold Policy
We honor all reservations
past the scheduled arrival time as long as it is the same
reservation date. This means the customer may show up at
anytime from their scheduled arrival time through the end of
business that day and be guaranteed their reserved rate. If
we have noticed that a customer will be arriving late due to
a flight delay, we will remain open past normal business
hours for 1 hour. If a customer arrives prior to their
scheduled arrival time, we will honor the reservation if a
vehicle is available. Early availability is not guaranteed.
Special Assistance and Services
Do you require special assistance when renting or traveling? Advantage
is doing our best to make it easy for you, too - whether you're
physically or visually impaired. At Advantage:
-All of our vehicles are available for rental to visually and hearing impaired travelers.
-All major airport locations are equipped with hand control devices.
-Disabled parking permits are not available. You must provide your own.
Impaired / Disabled Drivers
Advantage Rent A Car welcomes our
impaired/disabled travelers and is pleased to offer the
following accommodations and information for their safe,
enjoyable rental car experience.
Any vehicles available to the general public will be available for rental to visually impaired and hearing impaired travelers.
For visually impaired renters:
-All normal rental requirements apply with the exception of driver’s license; however, renter must present identification
-There will be no charge for additional assigned drivers (all drivers must be at least 21 years of age and have a valid driver’s license)
-Please advise at the time of reservation if the renter is physically impaired and needs additional assistance or will have an additional assigned driver. The impaired renter and any additional drivers must all be present at the time of rental.
For our physically
impaired/disabled renters:
-Disabled parking permits are not furnished, but may be provided by the individual renter.
-All major airport locations are equipped with hand control devices.
-Hand controls are available for most vehicle classes; however, the most requested classes are standard size (SCAR) and fullsize (FCAR) cars.
-Hand controls must be reserved 72 hours in advance (48 hours for State of Texas employees) and the request should include the designation of right-hand (HCR) or left-hand (HCL) controls in the OSI field. There is no additional charge for hand controls.
International Reservations
Affiliates
Advantage is pleased to partner with locally-owned and
operated car rental companies around the world to
provide service to Advantage customers. To make a
reservation with one of our affiliates, simply book
online or call 1-800-777-5500 to speak to a friendly
reservation agent about your next international travel
plans. Once in your destination country, note that with
the exception of our franchise in Mexico, all
international locations operate under the names of our
affiliate companies. Please check your itinerary or
electronic confirmation for the vehicle provider name,
phone number and pick up instructions.
Policies
As most international travelers know, you may need to
plan for higher fuel prices, different units of measure,
currency conversion as well as different traffic and
insurance regulations in your destination country.
Therefore, the rental policies for our international
locations are specific for each location. For all
international reservations, quotes will be presented in
U.S. Dollars but the rental location will charge the
equivalent in local currency. Please read them carefully when booking or call
1-800-777-5500 for additional assistance. Be sure to
ask about additional driver fees, underage drivers fees,
one way rentals and mandatory coverages.
International Driving Permits
A U.S. driver’s license is honored in most countries;
however, there are countries where non-local Driving
Licenses (in different languages or particularly in
languages using a non-Roman alphabet) are not honored.
Advantage Rent A Car recommends you carry an
International Driving Permit. An IDP is written in 10
languages and serves as an officially recognized
translation of your local driving license in over 150
participating members of the United Nations. Your IDP
should always be accompanied by your valid local
driver’s license. The Permit has been widely used for
more than fifty years and is recognized almost anywhere
in the world.
International Car Types
Many of
our international locations servicing airports are
located off airport property and provide either a
shuttle or meet-and-greet service for our Advantage
customers. For this reason, please provide your flight
details to your reservation agent or provide your flight
number when booking via the Internet.
Credit Cards
Renters
must present a current and valid credit card in their
own name at the time of rental. The signature on the
back of the card must match the name imprinted on the
card. Not all types of credit cards are accepted at all
international locations. Please check with an Advantage
reservation agent or the location rental policies for
details.
One-Way Rentals
Some of
our affiliates offer one-way rentals. One-way rentals
are rental vehicles that can be rented at one location
and returned to another. Some one-way rentals are
assessed a one-time drop charge in addition to the
rental rate. Please book your one-way rentals in
advance. Check with your Advantage reservations agent
for details.
Geographical Restrictions
Some
Advantage affiliates permit renters to drive the rental
vehicle into neighboring countries based on the policies
of the rental location and any laws regarding travel
between countries. The rental vehicle must be returned
to an approved rental location within the country the
vehicle was originally rented from. Please inquire at
time of rental for details and any applicable fees.
Security Deposits
Most of
our international locations will require a refundable
deposit held on the renter’s credit card at the time of
rental. In many cases, it is equivalent to 10% of the
value of the rental vehicle or in other cases, equal to
an insurance deductible. This deposit is over and above
the rental rate.
Insurance and Waivers
Some affiliate locations require the renter to purchase
local rental insurance(s) regardless of any insurance or
coverage provided by renter’s insurance company or
credit card. In locations where the local insurance is
not mandatory, it does offer peace of mind and is worth
considering. Advantage Rent A Car recommends that before
renting, the renter verify international rental
coverages with their insurance and credit card
companies. Many policies are only good within the U.S.,
on certain vehicle types or are valid for a certain
length of time. Advantage Rent A Car strongly advises
you to contact your credit card issuing company before
rental and provide details/proof of your coverage in
writing when arriving at the Advantage Rent A Car
affiliate rental location.
International Road Conditions
While in a foreign country, U.S. citizens may encounter
road conditions that differ significantly from those in
the United States. If your plans include travel to
secluded beaches or rural locations, please be aware
that roads may be in poor condition and large potholes
with the potential to cause significant damage to
vehicles are possible. Upgrades to larger vehicles or
high clearance, rugged suspension four-wheel drive
vehicles are strongly urged in locations where this is
common. Renters are urged to call ahead to their hotel
or point of contact to determine road conditions.
