First things first: As much as any other type of restaurant and more than most, Southwest themed restaurants depend on their ambience and their decor to give their meals authenticity. My point here is that you can go to most any grocery store in America and purchase the ingredients to make a Latin style meal. When that meal is served and consumed in your dining room or kitchen it is pretty much just another meal. When those same ingredients are prepared and served in a setting such as El Patron the difference in satisfaction is remarkable.
El Patron is one of the most beautiful and authentic Southwestern style restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure to dine in. The attention to detail which the owners have provided to make El Patron truly authentic is simply amazing. There are the photographs of Emiliano Zapata and Pancho Villa, some of which are actually autographed, as well as the tile floors, the hand carved statues and the beautiful rope frames for the tapestries along with the wide open seating at the sturdy wooden tables certainly gives you the feeling of being south of the border.
One of the things about most Mexican meals is that the bases for several different dishes are the same ingredients for the most part with some small variations. Because of this, Mexican dishes don't have a great deal of variety tastewise Some of this is due to the fact that many popular dishes are served "smothered" with sauces or chili verde that give the meal a sameness whether it's a combination of enchiladas and burritos and tamales or flautas and stuffed sopapillas. It is then essential for the sauces and chilies to be good to make the meal noteworthy. The sauces and chilies at El Patron are exceptional. The red sauce on the enchiladas was lightly spiced and honest to it's tomato roots and it partnered very well with the cheese enchiladas. The chili verde (green chili) that smothered my shredded beef burrito was quite good and it's ease in accepting the addition of some delicious salsa to give it a little more kick without being overwhelmed, testified to the degree of the abilities of the chefs. The chile relleno that I enjoyed was good enough to have me return all on it's own. The Spanish rice was good and the refried beans were pretty ordinary which was pretty much the only ordinary thing about the entire dining experience. The Patron Tequila margaritas were large in both quantity and quality and the warm tortilla chips that were served with salsa and bean dip immediately after we were seated were very good, which in no small part was due to their being made on site and not store bought which is exactly how almost all of El Patron's specialties are made.
El Patron can handle parties of up to 250 hungry, thirsty people and offers live mariachi / Latin music 4 days a week and I hear tell that a jazz night is in the works. I am sure that El Patron's East facing outdoor patio, just off of the music stage will be the place to be in all but the coldest of months here. There are weekend buffets served from 9:00AM -2:00PM with an amazing variety of popular offerings including huevos (eggs) made to order, menudo and birria (young goat). Oysters are served 24/7 and the bar is very well stocked with all manner of cervezas and liquor. This meal was outstanding and if you've tired of searching for quality southwestern style food and drink served in a very clean, friendly, authentic environment then you need to swing on by El Patron.
