The Miracle Mile Shops in Las Vegas:
Like being in L. A just four hours from L.A.!
A little quick research tells me that there's a Miracle Mile shopping district in New York, Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania, and it's also a movie, an album, and a few songs. But all those copycats weren't built as a homage to the original Miracle Mile, that mid-Wilshire section of Los Angeles that in 1920 gave birth to the first drive-to shopping destination. That first development was designed around the thought that cars are the future, and everyone will want to drive to the store. Ninety years later, Wilshire Boulevard is home to traffic congestion that's bad even by L.A. standards.
Full circle, then. We're all tired of being in our cars so much, so this new Miracle Mile gives us the chance to stroll again. It's a popular place, frequently crowded, and always stuffed with things to do. You'll find some of the densest foot traffic in Las Vegas parading through the stores. It's populated by average-priced retailers, so most shoppers will feel at home here, and be able to leave with purchases instead of just memories. A few theatres and a few free attractions add up to a lot of entertainment options in all price ranges. Hotel guests have their own entrance to the mall.
As one of the remnants of when the mall was the Moroccan-themed "Desert Passage," the indoor Rainstorm falls every half hour from Friday to Sunday. Most of the time, it's an innocuous bridge over a pool. But when the clock strikes, the sky darkens, thunder rumbles, and rain begins to drop from the sky-painted ceiling. It's hard to call it a "show..." "event" might be more accurate, or "happening." It starts to rain, then it stops, and you stroll away thinking "Huh! A mild shower. Inside!" Along these lines, there's a free fountain show in front of the V theatre, and a laser light show by the giant Bebe store.
The Widest Range of Shows in Las Vegas
Three theatres and a few restaurants and bars provide a lot of show variety.
Eat/Drink/Dance/Laugh:
- Cabo Wabo - Sammy Hagar owns it, helps find bands to play at it, and shows up to jam himself from time to time.
- La Salsa Cantina- On Friday and Saturday night, they push back the tables and dance. No cover, all kinds of music.
- Blondie's- Sporting events, beer pong, and a lot of locals sing karaoke. Why is karaoke a big deal? Because we live in a city stuffed full of singers and musicians, that's why.
- The Amazing Jonathan- unexpected and hilarious magic
- American Storm- more six-packs than at Seven-Eleven
- Fab Four Live- if you squint just a little, they really are the Beatles.
- Marc Savard esmerized- if you don't believe in hypnotism, you should definitely, definitely, definitely volunteer to be hypnotized.
- Naughty Boys Hypnosis Show- for immature mature people
- V- the ultimate variety show- it changes frequently, and is always a lot of fun
- Popovich Comedy Pet Theater- Gregory Popovich rescues animals from shelters, teaches them tricks, and elicits "awwwwws" from all who watch.
- Sin City Comedy- Improv, Vegas-style
- The Mentalist- Gerry McCambridge. How does he do that? Seriously, how the HECK does he do that?
- Stripper 101- More of a class than a show, more about dancing than stripping... no boys allowed.
- Hitzville- A high, high-energy Motown Revue
- Peepshow- kind of a feminist, Alice-in-Wonderland rock concert. With naked celebrities.
The Miracle Mile offers the most affordable shopping you'll find on the south strip. With so much happening, it's always worth a walk-through if you've got some time to kill and things to buy. It's even worthwhile if shopping isn't your thing. Here's a one-sentence review from K.I. of Concord, CA, describing why he gave the mall a five-star rating: "I maintained my buzz while shopping with my wife." Sounds like if simple pleasures are your thing, the Miracle Mile is your place.
