Children Traveling Alone
Children between the ages of 5-14 may travel unaccompanied when
participating in Northwests unaccompanied minor program. An
unaccompanied minor fee will be assessed prior to departure and certain
exemptions to this fee apply. Please see the chart below for details.
In addition, the following policies have been established:
-Any child age 5 through 14 traveling without an adult 18 years of age or older must participate in the Unaccompanied Minor Program. All rules and fees apply.
-Children ages 5 through 7 may fly unaccompanied on nonstop, direct flights only, even when traveling with another child age 8 through 17 (no connections that change planes allowed).
-Children ages 5 through 14 will not be accepted on red-eye flights.
-Children ages 5 through 14 will not be accepted on the last direct flight of the day.
-Children ages 8 through 14 will not be accepted on the last connecting flight of the day. Policy change effective for tickets issued on or after May 1, 2006, for travel on domestic and international flights.
-Red-eye flights are defined as departures between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. local time. The following are exempt from the red-eye restriction:
--Domestic short-haul flights (2 hours or less)
--Flights to and from Alaska and Hawaii
-Unaccompanied minors will not be accepted for international travel if their itinerary includes a connection to an off-line carrier. Northwest code-share partners are not included in this restriction.
-Reservations must be confirmed to the child's final destination.
-The Northwest unaccompanied minor service is mandatory for children ages 5-14, and optional for children ages 15-17.
-Northwest will provide supervision for children accepted under the program from the time of boarding until the child is met at the final destination.
-Up to four children (related or not related) traveling together will be assessed only one service fee. Exception, more than four related children traveling together will be assessed only one service fee.
-Children under the age of 5 are not eligible for unaccompanied minor services and must be accompanied on the same flight and in the same compartment by a passenger at least 18 years of age.
-Unaccompanied minors must be checked in with an agent. They are not eligible to use the self-service check-in devices

If your travel includes a carrier other than Northwest or Northwest Airlink, check directly with that carrier for your travel needs as different policies and procedures may apply. Northwest Airlink includes flights operated by Mesaba Aviation and Pinnacle Airlines.
Some Northwest designated flights are operated by our partner airlines. Services presently provided by Northwest Airlines may not be available on these designated flights. Please check with your travel agent or Northwest directly so we can verify our partner accessibility and try to accommodate your needs.
Northwest now offers Airline Ticket Protector through an insurance
provider, Access America. Airline Ticket Protector is the combination
of travel insurance benefits and travel assistance services designed to
provide you greater peace of mind and added protection when traveling.
It's something that every traveler needs, no matter what type of trip
they're taking. Some of the covered reasons include:
-Illness, Injury or Death of you, a covered family member or traveling companions
-Jury duty, court order or subpoena requiring you to cancel your trip
-Employer termination - if you or a traveling companion have been with the same employer for at least 3 continuous years, and are terminated through no fault of your own.
-Fire, flood, burglary, vandalism or natural disasters making your home uninhabitable
-You or a traveling companion being directly involved in a traffic accident while directly en route to departure
Subject to the terms and conditions, here are a few of the benefits you'll enjoy:
-Reimbursement of the non-refundable portion of your travel investment if you have to cancel or interrupt your travel for a covered reason;
-Reimbursement for unexpected travel expenses you might incur;
-24-hour access to emergency medical referrals and assistance;

Traveling with Pets
Northwest Airlines is a recognized industry leader in the safe and efficient transport of pets and other live animals.
Whether your pet is traveling with you or traveling alone, or you are a
commercial shipper needing safe and efficient transport for your
animals, Northwest has several options available to best serve your
Northwest welcomes small domesticated dogs, cats and birds
in the passenger cabin on all flights within the U.S. (except to
Hawaii). Small dogs and cats are also permitted in the passenger cabin
between the U.S. and many international destinations.
Pets Traveling with Your Luggage
We know your pet is important to you. Your pet is also important to us at Northwest Airlines. For this reason, the Priority Pet
program was developed to provide your pet with a safe and comfortable
journey when accompanying you and traveling with your luggage.
Priority Pet incorporates the following:
-Employee training at all locations.
-Dedicated personnel and facilities to speed connections at our Detroit, Memphis and Minneapolis/St. Paul hubs.
-Written confirmation provided to you before departure that your pet is safely onboard the aircraft.
-Transportation on all Northwest and Northwest Airlink aircraft equipped with heated and pressurized luggage compartments.
-All luggage is subject to search.
-Northwest reserves the right to refuse luggage for the following reasons:
-Luggage size, weight, character, or condition unsuitable for transportation on the particular aircraft.
-Luggage cannot be accommodated without harming or inconveniencing other passengers.
Luggage Check Options
Curbside luggage check is available at most U.S. airports up to six (6)
hours prior to flight departure. Northwest's curbside luggage check is
fully compliant with all FAA security requirements and you will need to
present required documentation and photo-identification. Review Luggage Information for Northwest's domestic luggage allowance.
After checking your luggage:
-If you have a boarding pass from nwa.com check-in, proceed directly to your gate.
-If you need a boarding pass, visit a Northwest Airlines Self-service Check-in Kiosk or see a Northwest agent.
Curbside luggage check cannot be used for:
-International itineraries including Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
-Luggage that exceeds piece allowance, is oversize or overweight.
-Pets traveling as checked luggage.
Northwest allows you to carry one piece of luggage on board the
aircraft plus a purse or briefcase or laptop computer or small
backpack. The carry-on luggage must be of a size and shape to allow for
storage in overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you.
-Cannot exceed 45 linear inches (9 inches by 14 inches by 22 inches)
-Cannot exceed 40 pounds.
Note: Luggage not meeting these specifications must be checked and is subject to any applicable fees.
Exception: Pinnacle flights, CRJ aircraft and Mesaba flights,
SF3 aircraft require that the one piece of carry-on luggage is checked
and will be returned planeside. A purse or briefcase or laptop
computer or small backpack may be carried into the cabin.
Cabin Seat Luggage
Northwest Airlines will allow you to purchase a ticket for an item,
approved by Northwest, which is too fragile or bulky to be handled as
The following restrictions apply:
-You will be charged 100% of the applicable adult fare for the portion of the trip on which the extra seat is used.
-Must be packaged or covered in a manner to avoid injury to other customers.
-Must be properly secured by a seat belt to avoid shifting during flight.
-Must not restrict access to, or use of, any regular or emergency exit or aisle of the cabin.
-Must not obscure any passenger's view of "seat belt," "no smoking," or "exit" signage.
-Must not contain dangerous goods.
||In Flight Meals
Northwest Airlines offers specially prepared smartsnacks Snack Boxes for your enjoyment onboard many of our flights. Additionally, we now offer smartsnacks Sandwiches on select flights to/from the West Coast, Cancun, Montego Bay and Nassau. Online pre-ordering is required on these flights
On other flights, if your itinerary includes smartsnacks Sandwiches, you may pre-order your Sandwiches online at least 13 hours before your flight is scheduled to depart, although it is not required. Simply select the View/Change Reservations option from the Reservations Center on nwa.com to select your preference. A Flight Attendant will deliver your Sandwich in-flight and collect cash payment at that time.
The new smartsnacks have replaced complimentary meals for domestic Coach Class customers. Northwest will continue to provide complimentary meals in First Class and on international flights.
