Viva Elvis by Cirque Du Soleil
French-Canadian company Cirque Du Soleil creates a tribute show to Elvis Presley's blues-rooted rock-and-roll. Anything can happen!
Remember Elvis? Remember the plastic pompadours, the oversized shoes, the superhero aspirations? No? Maybe that's because Cirque Du Soleil has taken things that are at best tangentally connected to the Elvis legacy, and turned them into giant show pieces. That 20-foot shoe with acrobats leaping off? It's the Blue Suede Shoe. That sea of plastic pompadours, when every performer also dons a gaudy jumpsuit? It's Viva Las Vegas. The superhero antics? Well, apparently, Elvis really like comics when he was growing up.
Some of the artistic license can be forgiven. Cirque Du Soleil did much the same thing with the Beatles and ended up with Love, one of the top shows in Las Vegas. The artsy weirdness that drips from every act in Love is clever and oddly appropriate. Perhaps that's because the music of the Beatles evolved drastically over the decades, even plunging through its own stage of artsy weirdness.
Elvis didn't. His music changed over the years, but not that much. He never got too experimental, too extreme. His songs picked up a little more depth as he aged, and the sound grew, but that was it. An Elvis song is an Elvis song. So in Viva Elvis, some of the remixed classics and accompanying routines work very well. And some don't.
It is all spectacular. Cirque Du Soleil does spectacular. The sets glitter, the acrobats fly, and every dancer whirls by in a costume billowing with unearthly life. Every art comes together... music, sets, props, costumes, dance, casting, makeup, and even the theater itself are all built to compliment one another.
Viva Elvis is a great show. It should be considered by those unaware of Elvis' fantastic music, or casual fans. The diehard might have a difficult time enjoying Cirque Du Soleil's intrepretation of Elvis.
