The tallest structure west of the Mississippi is the Stratosphere Tower, a needle-like apparition built over a hotel/casino of standard Vegas size. While the Strip doesn't have real borders to its North and South, the Stratosphere is generally considered to be at the far North end.

It's a fairly cheap place to stay, thanks to its location removed from the heart of the Strip. It's rooms are always among the lowest-priced 30% of Strip properties. The hotel is kept up-to-date and clean, and the only reason for the good value is that most visitors want to stay a little closer to the action. In some cases, what you'll save in room rates, you'll spend in cab fares. Guests with their own transportation would do well to stay here.

The Stratosphere Tower

The 1,149 foot tall Stratosphere Tower is the tallest structure in the west, and the tallest free-standing tower in the U.S.A. Originally planned to be almost 2,000 feet high, the pinnacle was scaled back because of concerns voiced by the airport. Still, the tower remains the best view in the valley.

Level 109: Outdoor observation deck, and the entrance to the X-scream and Insanity thrill rides. Usually windy.

Level 108: Indoor observation deck, and the entrance to the Big Shot and Skyjump thrill rides. There is a bar, a caricature stand, and a gift shop on this level.

Level 107: The lounge overlooks the Top of the World Restaurant and the entire valley, creating a beautiful place to drink and talk.

Level 106: The Top of the World Restaurant

Level 105: Kitchen

Level 104: Meeting facilities

Level 103: Wedding chapels

Skyjump Las Vegas

A person falling from the skyjump at the Stratosphere

The first thought in anyone's head upon standing over the outward-leaning windows of the Stratosphere tower's observation deck is: "It must be terrifying/amazing/insane to fall off of this thing." Now, it's possible to fall off and live.

The Stratosphere is home to the world's highest decelerator, the Skyjump. Thrill seekers can strap themselves into a harness, hook up to long cables, then fling themselves off of the 855-ft high platform to a bulls-eye far below. It's the most recent addition to a family of thrill rides including the Insanity, Excream, and Big Shot. In a city known for excitement, Skyjump brings thrills to a whole new level.

The price for so much adrenaline isn't cheap. The experience starts at $99.99, and rise to about $130 for the whole package including jump, t-shirt, and DVD. Most reports say that the cost is quite reasonable, considering the time it takes to get suited up and prepared for a jump, and the much higher cost of similiar ventures such as skydiving. Even if you don't want to shell out $100 bucks for an experience, thrills can be had just watching the lucky ones jumping, and listening to the comments around the observation deck. If you've ever wanted to learn how to shout "That's crazy!" in thirty different languages, level 108 is the place to loiter.

The Stratosphere Hotel

Well over 2,000 Stratosphere hotel rooms await travellers to Las Vegas, in adition to 133 suites and mini-suites. Over half of these have been redesigned in the past five years, making a better place to stay just an upgrade away.

A Stratosphere King Room A deluxe hotel room at the Stratosphere
A Stratosphere Queen Room Double queens at the Stratosphere hotel.

Guestrooms: the average guestroom at the stratosphere is 350 to 400 square feet. That's not huge, but it's enough for a couple of guests to relax in comfort. Different rooms have different names and prices, mostly depending on how high up they are and what they are next to. The furnishings and amenities will all be similiar, though some of the higher-end rooms have jets in the tubs and bigger beds.

The hotel has plenty to do on the premesis, and plenty of shops and restaurants surround it. Walking North isn't a good idea, as the neighborhood quickly turns into tire shops and run-down buildings.

A premier tower deluxe room A spa king room.
The Players rooms, Las Vegas. A tower suite at the hotel.

Mini-Suites: The average size of a Stratosphere Mini-Suite is 700 square feet, just as big as an Encore suite. Each consists of two separate rooms, one for sleeping, one for sitting. Some suites are equipped with pullout beds for additional guests, marble entryways, spa tubs, or oversized bathrooms.

A suite is technically two or more rooms sold together as a unit, so size doesn't really matter... a hotel could put beds in closets, connect them, and call thema suite. But 700 square feet is a reasonable size, so enjoy the mini-luxury for a very affordable price.

A casino suite. Executive suite.
A Stratosphere Suite The Stratosphere's Penthouse Suite

Premier Suites: From 980 to 2,165 square feet, the premier suites represent the best the Stratosphere has to offer. The hotel is 25 stories high, and these spacious apartments occupy only the highest floors. There are no hotel rooms in the tower itself. While each suite is different, it's not uncommon to find a wet bar, spa tub, multiple bedrooms, powder rooms, refrigerators, kitchen areas, and marble entryways.
